I first saw this style of jug in a museum in New Orleans.  It was glazed in a dark blackish brown glaze.  This French jug is 6" tall and holds 28-32oz.  It would fit the 18th century French reenactor, or someone from Louisiana, Canada, or other French settlements.  I doubt any of these would have been made in the British colonies.  They were probably imported.
